Discipline as a Transferable Skill
July 11, 2026Everyone can benefit from adding more creativity to their lives. Creativity can help you solve problems, improve work projects, achieve your goals, manage your home and family more effectively, and discover new opportunities. Fortunately, creativity is a skill that can be developed with practice.
Here are 10 simple tips to help boost your creativity.
1. Stay Healthy
A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Find an exercise routine that you enjoy and stick with it. Change your routine when you need variety, but make physical activity a regular habit. Get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, and make time to relax. Meditation, deep breathing, or any activity that helps you unwind can improve focus and encourage creative thinking.
2. Explore New Things
Many of the things we do every day become automatic routines. While routines are helpful, they can also limit creative thinking. Break out of your comfort zone by trying something new. Take a different route to work, visit a new place, or enroll in a class you’ve always wanted to take.
3. Become More Curious
Ask questions about everything you see, hear, and read. Why does something work the way it does? How could it be improved? What if things were done differently? Look for the answers, and consider keeping a journal to record your ideas and discoveries.
4. Read Something Different
Choose a book outside your usual interests. If you typically read nonfiction, try a novel. If you usually enjoy mystery books, explore history, science, or biographies. Reading different genres introduces you to new perspectives and inspires fresh ideas.
5. Think Like a Child
Children are naturally curious, imaginative, and fearless when it comes to trying new things. Reconnect with activities you enjoyed as a child. Paint, draw, build something, visit an amusement park, or simply allow yourself to play without worrying about the outcome. Creativity often flourishes when we let go of perfectionism.
6. Make Time for Yourself
Everyone needs a little “me” time. Set aside a few minutes each day to relax without distractions. Don’t check emails, pay bills, or plan your schedule. Simply enjoy a quiet moment to recharge your mind and allow new ideas to emerge naturally.
7. Ask “What If?”
Challenge your imagination by asking “What if?” questions.
- What if you pursued your dream career?
- What if you lived in another country?
- What if you started your own business?
- What if tomorrow brought an unexpected opportunity?
There are no right or wrong answers. The purpose is to encourage your mind to think beyond its usual boundaries.
8. Avoid Making Assumptions
Assumptions can limit your thinking and lead to misunderstandings. Instead of jumping to conclusions, consider alternative explanations.
For example, you may think your boss is being difficult, but perhaps they’re dealing with personal challenges. The driver who cut you off in traffic may be rushing to an emergency. Looking at situations from different perspectives encourages empathy and creative thinking.
9. Write About Yourself
Take time to reflect by journaling. Ask yourself questions such as:
- Who am I?
- What are my strengths?
- What experiences have shaped my life?
- What matters most to me?
- Why do I make the choices I do?
- How can I become the person I want to be?
Self-reflection often leads to greater self-awareness and creative insights.
10. Have Meaningful Conversations
Talk with people from different backgrounds and truly listen to what they have to say. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, focus on understanding their experiences and perspectives. Every conversation offers an opportunity to learn something new and broaden your thinking.
Creativity isn’t a gift reserved for artists, writers, or inventors—it’s a skill that anyone can develop. By staying curious, embracing new experiences, taking care of your health, and keeping an open mind, you can strengthen your creative thinking over time.
The more you practice creativity, the more naturally it will become part of your everyday life, helping you solve problems, adapt to challenges, and discover opportunities you might never have noticed before.
