Face Fitness: Why Training Your Facial Muscles Is the Missing Secret to Healthy, Youthful Skin
July 16, 2026If you’ve been struggling with dark spots left behind by acne, sun exposure, ingrown hairs, or skin irritation, exfoliation can become one of the most effective steps in your skincare routine.
Exfoliation works by removing the layer of dead skin cells that sits on the surface of your skin. As new skin cells are produced, the old, pigmented cells are gradually replaced, helping your complexion appear brighter and more even over time.
Step 1: Choose the Right Exfoliant
Not all exfoliants work the same way.
- Glycolic acid is ideal for improving uneven skin tone and fading sun spots.
- Salicylic acid is best for oily or acne-prone skin because it unclogs pores while helping reduce post-acne marks.
- Lactic acid is a gentler option for sensitive or dry skin and helps improve both texture and pigmentation.
Step 2: Start Slowly
More isn’t always better.
Begin by exfoliating just two or three times a week, preferably in the evening. This gives your skin enough time to renew itself without becoming irritated. If your skin feels red, sore, or excessively dry, reduce the frequency.
Step 3: Moisturise After Exfoliating
After removing dead skin cells, your skin needs hydration.
A moisturiser helps restore the skin barrier, preventing dryness and allowing your skin to recover while the exfoliant continues to work.
Step 4: Never Skip Sunscreen
This is the step many people overlook.
Freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV rays. Without daily sunscreen, dark spots can become darker, making it much harder to achieve an even skin tone.
Be Patient with the Process
Dark spots don’t disappear in a few days. Depending on their cause and depth, they may take several weeks or even months to fade.
Instead of looking for instant results, focus on consistency. Every skincare routine is a long-term investment in healthier skin.
A Simple Example Routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Vitamin C or niacinamide serum
- Moisturiser
- SPF 30 or higher
Evening (2–3 times a week)
- Cleanser
- Chemical exfoliant (glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid)
- Moisturiser
Evening (non-exfoliation days)
- Cleanser
- Hydrating or brightening serum
- Moisturiser
Remember, healthy skin isn’t about using the strongest products—it’s about choosing the right products and using them consistently. Small improvements made every week will lead to noticeable results over time.
